You can always rely on spring to bring the safari trend back around. Some seasons the perspective is literal, using camouflage and leaf prints. Other seasons the perspective is more utilitarian, bringing back cargo pockets, flowing linens, and belted waists.

The latest Spring runways inspired me to abandon certain things in my closet, including a lingering pair of skinny cargo chinos. But it also inspired me to revive this old Marc Jacobs dress (which I’ve nearly parted with on several occasions).

I bought this dress a few years ago, while I was still living in Austin. Spring safari trends were very chino and utility oriented, but this dress felt embellished enough to be work appropriate. I hadn’t exercised it very much since relocating to San Francisco, but there were a few combinations on spring runways that inspired me to do something a little different with it: the first was, obviously, the safari trend, and the second was the 70′s revival of tunics over pants. While this combination isn’t exactly on par with the flowing bohemian styles of the 70′s, I thought it better to pair a relatively fitted dress over a more tailored trouser.

Short-Haired Blues

I’ve talked about uniform dressing and how important I think it is to developing your “lewk”. This outfit is definitely one of my uniforms – last year I wore this three-shoulder vest so much that people would comment when I wasn’t wearing it. I was like a child with their blanky.

So I was naturally surprised when I reviewed my shots of this outfit and struggled to find even a single usable image that I liked. Could my passion for one of my beloved uniforms be cooling?!? After making several passes through all of my shots, I ultimately came to the conclusion that it’s my hair that I’m in hate with and not the look. You see, I shot these photos about three weeks ago – the day after getting a bleach and cut.

One of the challenges that all short-haired women will commiserate with each other about is the “haircut sweetspot”. I think women who have bangs also will know what I’m talking about. Basically, what happens is this:
- you go and get your normal haircut and feel for two weeks that your hair is too short and it makes your stupid face look too stupid  >:-(
- after two weeks and one day go by, you will be in love with your hair. It now frames your face just so, making you feel feminine again!
- after four weeks and one day, your hair will be a poofy mess that you have no control of! It will form curly wings all over your head and try to fly off while you aren’t watching it! Bad hair, Bad!
- On week 5, you go visit your beloved colorist and stylist and repeat the process all over again.

This is the short hair cycle. By the way, I think men always have short hair problems and that is why many of the ones I know go for a haircut every three weeks.

We’re still having very wishy washy weather here in San Francisco. Humid, overcast, coolish, and sometimes rainy.

This lofty cotton Cheap Monday sweater has turned out to be a really friendly piece for this kind of weather. Sometimes I’ll wear it 4 different ways all weekend long. Here I’m dressing it up for a brunch date by pairing it with my new leather skirt from Madewell and an old Marc by Marc Jacobs clutch.

This is the first leather skirt that I have owned, though I’ve been eying them for several seasons. I really want one of the Alexander Wang ones, but they sell out so quickly and are at the price point where it would be a major investment for me. This one from Madewell is at a good price, probably because it is constructed using several pieces of leather, so that really lowers the material cost. But I actually quite like the combination of the piecing together with the pebbled leather. Plus, it has an exposed back zipper, which I love!

By the way, I always recommend that if you are trying a new silhouette that you opt for a lower cost item first. Then you can experiment and build your confidence about how to wear it before spending more on an investment piece the next season.
